Andrew Garfield was caught texting during the Oscars after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, and now the Tick Tick Boom actor has revealed who he was texting.
Andrew Garfield reveals who he was texting after the infamous Oscars slap. This year's Academy Awards ceremony will likely go down as one of the most talked-about moments of 2022, but not because of the talented actors and filmmakers who won Oscars. During the presentation of Best Documentary Feature, Chis Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith appearing in a G.I. Jane sequel, which clearly offended her due to struggles with alopecia.
Dozens of celebrities reacted to the incident, most condemning Smith's use of violence to respond to Rock's joke. Tyler Perry and Denzel Washington attempted to calm Smith down during a commercial break, and less than an hour later, Smith won an Oscar for his performance in King Richard. Smith's career is already being affected by the incident, by projects put on hold, and him being banned from the Academy for 10 years.
So, I feel so bad because, you know, Kevin Costner’s introducing the director nominees in the most beautiful and elegant way, and I’m like ‘There’s no way I’m gonna be on camera during this. And everyone’s texting me, asking me, you know, what they’re asking me, like what the vibe in the room is. At that moment, my friends took priority over Kevin. But I feel really bad about that.
Garfield didn't reveal which friends he was texting, and he also refused to comment on what he thought about Smith assaulting Rock. Everybody from Rock's mom to Jada Pinkett Smith herself has already commented on the incident, so Garfield explained on The View that he didn't feel the need to weigh in on the situation.
Over the years, many celebrities have been caught doing or saying something embarrassing at the Oscars. It makes sense that Garfield wouldn't think he was on camera, especially since he wasn't involved with any of the directors nominated for Best Director. It's clear Garfield feels guilty about texting during the prestigious ceremony, but that likely isn't what people are going to be focused on going forward.
