These three principles served Carnegie well to succeed in his line of work. But his purpose from the outset was the work, never the money. Prosperity was the consequence of his genuine interest in his job. “The money I have accumulated is but a minor fraction of my real riches.” The tragedy of this world, he posits, is that we haven’t found out a way for every man to pursue the job of his choosing.
The path to pursuing work you’re passionate about is far from straightforward. In fact, in most cases, it really is akin to wading in a dark swamp. Carnegie’s prescriptive three principles are a starting point. The pursuit is never a straight line and most likely will include many stops and starts. But perseverance, as he notes, is critical. Once you start, your eyesight acclimates. You familiarize yourself with your surroundings.
