After dropping 5.5 per cent during the pandemic, the province’s GDP rebounded 6.3 per cent in 2021. Quebec’s unemployment rate, for many years a source of shame, is now the lowest in the country at only 4.5 per cent.

Girard was accused of playing politics with the province’s budget. “Fighting inflation is the Bank of Canada’s job,” he noted Monday morning. All a province can do is help individuals and families face the price increases, he said. The opposition parties had suggested different measures — freezing electricity rates, for example — but cutting Quebecers a cheque appeared the most practical.
