André Pratte: Confusing Liberal gun ban the result of either incompetence or cynicism cdnpoli
What is in the government’s amendments? One seeks to prohibit all “assault-style” rifles in the future, by stating a new definition of those firearms: “A firearm that is a rifle or a shotgun, that is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that is designed to accept a detachable cartridge magazine with a capacity greater than five cartridges of the type for which the firearm was originally designed.” Got it? Exactly.
If the government had sought to write the most confusing legislation possible regarding firearms, C-21 and the related amendments would be the result. In committee, Bloc MP Kristina Michaud and Mr. Noormohamed tried to get the officials to clarify the meaning of the definitions and of the list, with limited success. For their part, the Conservatives were not at all interested in the officials’ explanations; their only goal was to pour gas on the fire.
