André Boudrias nicknamed ‘Super Pest’ became a hockey folk hero Globe_Sports
Andre Boudrias of the New Jersey Devils poses for a portrait backstage at the 2006 NHL Draft held at General Motors Place on June 24, 2006, in Vancouver.Gritty little André Boudrias was nicknamed “Super Pest” by Vancouver Canucks fans who admired his relentless pursuit of hockey opponents.
With his bubble-shaped helmet and white home sweater, he looked like a cue ball on the ice, a tenacious checker who ricocheted from opponent to opponent, pestering rival stickhandlers with a never-say-die determination. A few weeks later, the Canucks had a large photographic print of the backhanded goal presented to Mr. Boudrias, who, incidentally, is the only one of the four not to have been enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Instead, he found it difficult to crack a roster with great depth at centre, as he battled for a spot behind Jean Béliveau, Henri Richard and Ralph Backstrom. Mr. Boudrias would skate in only seven games over three seasons for the Canadiens, scoring a lone goal. The Canadiens suited him up as a replacement for Mr. Béliveau when the defending Stanley Cup champions defeated the league’s remaining top players 3-0 in the 1967 All-Star Game.
A productive 18-goal season renewed interest in the forward, who was traded to Chicago the following season after bickering with coach and general manager Wren Blair. The Blackhawks left him unprotected in the draft and the Blues snagged him as a role player for the penalty kill. Mr. Boudrias was hired as a scout by the New Jersey Devils, contributing to three more Stanley Cup championships , although his name was not added to the Cup.
