The Anchorage Assembly voted Tuesday to postpone awarding a roughly $6.5 million contract to Axon for body-worn cameras and surveillance equipment for the Anchorage Police Department.

An official with the police department said if the Assembly approved the memorandum, the cameras were scheduled to be rolled out in the fourth quarter of this year. The police department would start with 30 cameras for approximately 30 days to confirm that all systems are working correctly, and that data can be shared.Midtown representative Meg Zaletel made a motion to delay taking action on the item until the Aug. 22 Assembly meeting.

Rich Curtner of the Alaska Black Caucus was in attendance during the vote and expressed frustration afterward. “What I understood from the sponsors is that they’ve determined that it’s maybe not the best move to put personnel policies, or police policies into the code, but rather to come up with a way to set up guidelines that are more in the line with the tradition of the Assembly’s role in setting policy for the municipality,” Assembly Chair Christopher Constant said.
