South Africa’s ruling African National Congress has won 40.1% of votes cast in May 29 elections with almost all ballots counted, a historic repudiation of the party that has governed the country since Nelson Mandela led it to power at the end of apartheid in 1994. The results from 98% of voting districts amount to a stinging rebuke of the ANC’s record over the past decade, which has been characterised by economic stagnation, sky-high unemployment, decaying infrastructure and rampant crime.
The stunning decline in ANC support from 57.5% in 2019, which became apparent within hours of polls closing on Wednesday evening, means it will likely need to forge a coalition to continue governing. Final results are expected over the weekend, along with coalition discussions. Under the constitution, South Africa’s National Assembly must convene within 14 days to elect a speaker and a president after the declaration of the results.
