Analysis: The right’s young-voter problem
One of the things that struck me while watching a video of Ben Shapiro speaking at Rep. Dan Crenshaw’s in Houston earlier this month was that Shapiro, next-generation voice of the right, isn’t all that young anymore. At one point, for example, he made an “Old Man Yells At Cloud” joke about President Biden — a reference to an episode of “The Simpsons” that came out in 2002, slightly before or around the time that most of the summit’s attendees were born.
“In five years,” he said to the student, “you’re going to be voting, and you’re going to be the voting public long after the time when they’re impacting the political conversation.” It’s not clear if Crenshaw’s summit was meant more to foster engagement among young people or to build his own position with the group. As The Washington Post’s Ben Terris, the recommendations being made to encourage nonconservatives to join the movement were broadly vague: Treat people with respect and tailor your arguments to their concerns.
