Here’s what you need to know about the Blue Jays’ 12-11 win over the Angels in Anaheim on Sunday: Analysis by Wilnerness
drove in five runs each. Chapman’s day included his first career grand slam, while Kiermaier had a game-tying two-run double in the sixth and a go-ahead RBI double in the 10th.started it. The left-hander couldn’t hold onto the gains made in his first outing in Kansas City.
Kikuchi should have been out of the first inning unscathed, but Daulton Varsho lost an Anthony Rendon pop-up in the sun with two out and Ohtani on first. The ball fell for an RBI single. The inning extended, Kikuchi then left a 1-0 changeup up to Renfroe, who pounded it into the seats to give the Angels a 3-0 lead.
The 30-year-old also gave up round-trippers to Ohtani and rookie catcher Logan O’Hoppe before leaving in the fifth inning, down 6-0. It’s not exactly back to the drawing board for Kikuchi, who will have to face the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays in his next outing, but it certainly was a step back from what we’d seen from him during spring training.
The good news for the lefty was that he only walked one against six strikeouts, got 14 swings-and-misses out of his 99 pitches and never let things go sideways. It’s hard to imagine that happening last season, which is definitely a sign that we’re seeing a different Kikuchi this time around.
