Mike Wilner: Chris Bassitt’s shutout win Jays’ first in eight years
3-0 win over the Atlanta Braves at the Rogers Centre on Friday night:Chris Bassitt dominated the Braves from start to finish. The right-hander retired the first 13 batters he faced and sat down the last 10, becoming the first Jay since Marcus Stroman to throw a nine-inning complete game and the first since Mark Buehrle to throw a nine-inning shutout.
George Springer, who drove in the game’s first run with a two-out RBI single in the fifth, loved what he saw. “That’s an incredible lineup over there,” said the Jays’ leadoff man. “For him to do what he did, it just felt like he was in complete control over everything he threw. He seemed to throw sweepers and all sorts of Chris Bassitt stuff in counts that they weren’t expecting it.”
There was only one hiccup: in the top of the fifth inning, when Bassitt gave up a double , hit a couple of batters and walked another. With the bases loaded and two out in what was a 0-0 game, Bassitt popped up Orlando Arcia to end the threat. Schneider came out to talk to Bassitt with two out and nobody on in the eighth and asked how he felt. “Perfect,” responded the right-hander, who got Ronald Acuña Jr. to pop up on the next pitch.Kevin Kiermaier tried to steal the Jays an extra run on Springer’s RBI single. As Whit Merrifield scored, Springer took off for second base, trying to advance on the throw home.
