The 20-year-old is in his first pro season with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls, posting a 12-6-3 record with a .919 save percentage. He has shared the net with veterans Alex Stalock and Calle Clang, but Suchanek – the youngest of the three – has been the best, statistically. Suchanek’s save percentage is good for 12th in the AHL, and second among previously unsigned prospects.Suchanek went undrafted three years in a row, despite having a decent frame at 6-foot-2 and solid numbers in junior.
A national team stalwart, Suchanek helped lead the Czechs to the bronze medal game at the 2022 world juniors after starting as the backup. He took over the No. 1 gig in 2023, taking silver after leading the tournament with a .939 save percentage. Suchanek also won bronze at the 2019 U-17 World Hockey Challenge as the team’s starter.John Gibson and Lukas Dostal under contract for the 2024-25 campaign.
With Suchanek’s deal, he should factor into the Gulls’ plans again next year. The late-blooming keeper has shown promise this season and could still be a long-term option for the team. Gibson is the No. 1 for now, but Dostal could take over the top spot sooner rather than later. Anaheim is still in the midst of a rebuild, with their 23-43-3 record and 49 points putting them 30th out of 32 teams. The Ducks will host the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday before welcoming Tampa Bay to town on Sunday evening. They’ll then start a five-game road stand, with a pair of outings in Seattle, one in Edmonton, one in Vancouver and then will wrap it up against Calgary on April 2.
