Your decision to only allow 96 or 65-gallon trash and recycling containers and not to allow residents to opt for the smaller 35-gallon containers under the contract with Penn Waste was short-sighted. First, many residents do not generate weekly 96 or 65 gallons of trash and recycling; the 35-gallon units would be more than adequate.
Second, the size of the larger units has residents struggling to wheel the units to the curb weekly. Consider the retirement communities in the township and the seniors who now must wrestle with those large units when the smaller ones would be easier to handle. Third, many residents can no longer park their cars in their garages if storing the larger units in their garages. So many neighborhoods now have trash containers sitting outside their homes like yard decorations. It’s not a good look.
The township should tweak the contact with PW to permit residents to exchange the larger units for smaller ones, which PW uses in other townships. It could even allow residents to buy the smaller units. An exchange or purchase harms no one, PW or the township, and should not be a material change to the current contract. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
