CORNER BROOK, N.L. — When Sarah Walsh graduated from the Marine Institute in 2017, one of her main goals was to work for an organization that was trying to make the oceans a better place.

It was through this work that she was asked to help with another project that has put her in a position to achieve that goal of helping advance the understanding of the world’s oceans. That opportunity came when Paul Brett, vice-president of Memorial University for the Marine Institute, asked Walsh if she would be interested in participating in the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project.

“People are always collecting data, but there hasn’t always been a way to share it globally,” she noted. “Because we now have an organization like this that is making the call for people to actually share this information, we are able to move forward and start actually producing a global map that is going to be helpful for so many reasons.”

“It is also vital information which will enable the realization of the societal outcomes outlined by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 14: ‘to conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas and marine resources,’” states GEBCO’s website. One of the first things Walsh had to do was figure out what data the Marine Institute has already collected and how to compile it in a way that would be useful for the Seabed 2030 Project.

From here on, it will become a matter of letting the clients know up front that the data collection will be taking place.
