The underwater 'space station' project headed by Jacques Cousteau's grandson will make a bigger splash this year.
The facility, called Proteus, is the brainchild of Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of Jacques Cousteau.
This is by no means new territory for the government agency. NOAA has previously commandeered a similar reef base off the coast of Florida called Aquarius. But Aquarius is aging, and space there is relatively confined—accommodating up to six occupants in 400 sq ft. Proteus, the new project, aims to create a habitat around 2,000 sq ft for up to 12 occupants.
“Those will start progressing as we start working together,” Marrocchino says. “We’re just beginning the design process. It’s to the point where we are narrowing down the location. We’ve got one or two really great locations. Now we’re getting in there to see what can be built and what can’t be built.”

Phase Space Reconstruction from Accelerator Beam Measurements Using Neural Networks and Differentiable SimulationsCharacterizing the phase space distribution of particle beams in accelerators is a central part of understanding beam dynamics and improving accelerator performance. However, conventional analysis methods either use simplifying assumptions or require specialized diagnostics to infer high-dimensional ($>2\mathrm{D}$) beam properties. In this Letter, we introduce a general-purpose algorithm that combines neural networks with differentiable particle tracking to efficiently reconstruct high-dimensional phase space distributions without using specialized beam diagnostics or beam manipulations. We demonstrate that our algorithm accurately reconstructs detailed 4D phase space distributions with corresponding confidence intervals in both simulation and experiment using a limited number of measurements from a single focusing quadrupole and diagnostic screen. This technique allows for the measurement of multiple correlated phase spaces simultaneously, which will enable simplified 6D phase space distribution reconstructions in the future.
