“There were 100 Jewish families in Lubbock,” said Steven Skybell, who plays Tevye in a new all-Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof. “I never felt anti-Semitism there. I would take matzo in for show and tell—it was a curiosity.”

They’d seen it last summer when it played at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and were seeing it again in its new home at Stage 42 in Manhattan, where it reopened in February. They sat rapt, eyes filled with tears. They did not need the supertitles—in English and Russian—which ran on screens beside the stage.
