Lennox Island First Nation Chief Darlene Bernard said when Province House reopens to the public, significant Mi’kmaw articles will be part of the interpretive displays.

Lennox Island First Nation Chief Darlene Bernard took part in a ceremony at Province House in Charlottetown on Nov. 2.CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Chief Darlene Bernard of Lennox Island First Nation, who is also co-chair of the Abegweit Assembly of Councils, was among the Mi’kmaq leadership, L’nuey and Parks Canada representatives who took part in a ceremony at Province House in Charlottetown on Nov. 2, while the building is in its final phase of renovations.

Bernard said the event included a smudging ceremony with the Mi’kmaq as a way to “reset the tone of the building” as a positive act of reconciliation. After the ceremony, Parks Canada president and CEO Ron Hallman said colonial discussions and decisions that took place in the building in the past both excluded and impacted Indigenous people.

Bernard said when the building reopens to the public, significant Mi’kmaw articles will be part of the interpretive displays.
