Even so, many leaders still struggle to implement initiatives that lead to meaningful and sustainable results. “There’s a misunderstanding among some leaders that diversity is a program that you just deliver and it magically fixes everything,” says Michael Bach, founder and CEO of the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. The reality, he says, is that achieving greater diversity in the workplace requires a cultural shift that can be difficult to initiate and maintain.
Fortunately, Bach says, business leaders can follow these steps to position themselves to make tangible progress on fostering diversity and inclusion at their organizations.Deploying diversity and inclusion initiatives can require considerable investment in new resources and training. As a result, it’s critical that leaders focus on the ultimate payoff, including cost reductions in “hiring, downtime, human rights complaints, legal action and absenteeism,” says Bach.
