Passenger rail scrambles to restore train service after 20-hour negotiations result in labor deal
Passenger trains with key routes crossing through the Bay Area are scrambling to restore service on Thursday after labor negotiators reached aaverting a railroad strike that threatened to paralyze train travel and supply chains.
On Thursday, Amtrak said it is “working to quickly restore canceled trains and reaching out to impacted customers to accommodate on first available departures.” This comes after Amtrak announced aCapitol Corridor, which runs trains from, has restored previously announced cancellations and returned to regular service on Thursday and Friday. Caltrain is also running its regular service through Gilroy.
Trains are back on the rails Thursday after President Joe Biden announced a tentative labor agreement between the nation’s largest railroad companies and unions, who were threatening to strike after a looming midnight deadline. Amid pressure from the White House to reach an agreement, the two sides concluded 20 hours of negotiations that stretched into the early morning hours Thursday to break the impasse.
Employees of Amtrak and Bay Area rail agencies were not part of the labor dispute, but their passenger trains rely on privately-owned railroad tracks. If the unions authorized a strike, passenger trains would not be able to operate on private railways due to safety concerns. The five-year deal, retroactive to 2020, includes incremental salary increases through 2024, which will total a 24% wage bump, and $5,000 in bonuses that a Presidential Emergency Board recommended this summer. But railroads also agreed to ease their strict attendance policies to address some of the unions’ concerns about working conditions.
