SUNDRIDGE, N.S. — Wood, clay, cement, yarn, pencils, markers and paints are the tools of the artistic trade for Sundridge’s Elisa Rutledge.
“We have a gazebo on our property that has been converted into an art studio. It even has a wood stove so I can continue classes in winter.”“I set out all my art supplies and encourage my students to experiment. I want them to feel completely free. Last week we experimented with pouring paint onto boards which can be a bit messy, but I wanted them to see how different each piece is and to know that difference is interesting.
“I’ll guide them and answer questions, but I really want them to explore. It is completely different from paint nights with adults who want all the steps laid out for them.”“Nothing excites me more than seeing them expanding and improving their work. It is all about feeling free to express themselves.”For Rutledge, the rural property where she lives with her husband and two daughters, raising their own chickens and laying hens, is a constant inspiration.
“I’ve created my own little forest people who don’t have a name yet. For the time being, I refer to them as gremlins or goblins, but I will come up with a name. I put them against a forest background or down among the mushrooms. They are quite detailed and distinctive.” “I was thrilled to be asked to do the illustrations for Lauren’s beautiful poem. I felt it was a family project, so it is really very special to me.”
