Tens of thousands of shampoo and conditioner products have been recalled in Canada due to potential microbial contamination. Health Canada published a recall notice on Friday stating that Amika products could be contaminated with the bacteria Plurabacter gergoviae, which poses a significant risk of infection to individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

The recalled products include the Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect shampoo and conditioner in various sizes sold between May 2023 and November 2024. This encompasses sizes such as 20 mL duo sets, 60 mL, 1 L, 275 mL, and 500 mL bottles. Health Canada reported receiving 48 complaints of foul odor and two reports of irritation or allergic reactions associated with these products since January 27th.The contaminated products, manufactured in the United States, were distributed throughout Canada via retailers such as Sephora, Walmart, Amazon, Well.ca, Evolution Beauty, Blend Box, Coastal Beauty, Industria Coiffure, Livia Beauty, and Beauty Sense. An estimated 95,000 units were sold. Health Canada urges consumers to immediately discontinue use of the recalled product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund upon presentation of proof of purchase.
