U.S. space agency calls for new proposals to reduce mission’s cost
The Mars Sample Return mission previously envisioned a team of robots—including a rocket-launching lander—retrieving samples collected by NASA’s Perseverance rover. Citing a budget shortfall, NASA is now soliciting ideas for faster and cheaper approaches.NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission may be the most audacious robotic exploration campaign ever conceived: a multimission attempt to collect rock samples from the Red Planet and get them back to laboratories on Earth.
NASA’s announcement follows an independent MSR review conducted last year by a 16-member panel led by Orlando Figueroa, NASA’s former director of Mars exploration. Thatemphasized the scientific importance of MSR but found the mission had a “near zero” probability of launching in the 2027-28 time frame, as originally conceived.
