American Airlines is growing at Boston Logan, regularly announcing new point-to-point flights—6 in the past year including 3 this week
On Tuesday, American announced three new Logan destinations: Indianapolis, Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, N.C., with service starting in the spring on 76-seat Embraer E175 regional jets. Raleigh-Durham is a particularly serious effort, with as many as five daily departures.
“We've had an incredible success in Boston,” Hauenstein said. “Customers are choosing us …As a matter of fact the third quarter data from the government just came out and we were in a virtual dead heat with Jet Blue as the largest revenue carrier in Boston. Moreover, Delta said in June that it will build a Boston hub that will have 200 daily departures by 2021. That put Delta in a battle with hub carrier JetBlue, which has led Logan in market share since 2011, despite a lack of trans-Atlantic flights. The battle with American may not have been so easily anticipated.
Travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt termed the flight “the nerd bird,” saying it links two large technology centers. American said Tuesday that its new Logan routes to Raleigh/Durham and Wilmington boost its presence in North Carolina, a growth state where American is already the largest carrier due to its Charlotte hub.
