Some political factions seem more interested in demonizing all immigrants than recognizing the potential they present for America.
Former Pa. Lt. Gov. Mark Singel in Sarasota, FL, Jan. 13, 2022. Daniel Wagner | Special to PennLiveIt is a fact that thousands of immigrants risk their lives to enter the United States every day. Why? Because they are scared to death that the drug lords and economic conditions will swallow their children and take away any hope for their futures.
Last week, President Biden announced that he would send 1,500 troops to the border to assure that the U.S Customs and Border Protection would have the support they need to deal with this surge in arrivals. In another development, the Biden administration reached a deal with the Mexican government that would allow a speedy deportation of illegal immigrants back to Mexico.
This level-headed diplomatic approach to the border crisis was met with a perplexing reaction from Republican opponents. The same people who supported hysterical calls for closing the borders, building walls, sending thousands of troops to deter mothers and children and, yes, building moats with alligators between Texas and Mexico, are nowhere in sight when it comes to fruitful international agreements.
