As the Liberal government races to implement its online news bill by the end of the year, the Senator that successfully pushed for a legislated going into force date said it was requested by Quebecor.
Independent Quebec Senator Julie Miville-Dechêne said the media giant — in a move supported by other broadcasters — asked her to amend C-18 to include a date when its provisions would have to go into effect as part of an effort to pressure the tech giants to negotiate deals to pay for links to Canadian news content.
“In particular, Quebecor even asked me; [they] wanted this particular change,” she said in an interview on Monday.
