LOS ANGELES ― When Dino Ebel and Jose Vizcaino were minor league shortstops in the Dodgers’ organization, they were asked to learn a new position on the fly. Their transition to second base was made possible by Lorenzo “Chico” Fernandez, a roving minor league infield instructor in the Dodgers’ system for more than two decades.
Vizcaino and Ebel believe turning double plays are the most difficult aspect of the transition from shortstop to second. “Then the arm angles,” Ebel said. “Everything’s in front of you when you’re throwing the ball from shortstop. Now, at second base, it’s arm angles, it’s double play turns. I think because he’s so athletic, is catching on quickly. Power arm. Good footwork.”
It’s not a stretch to say that Ebel and Vizcaino are drawing on the same lessons they learned from Fernandez, who passed away in 2020, to help Rosario with his own position switch.
