Retail giant Amazon will increase the price of its subscription service Prime for the first time since its launch in Australia in a move it says will enable the service to keep expanding.
Amazon will notify customers via email on Tuesday morning that the price of Prime will jump from $6.99 a month to $9.99 a month, or from $59 to $79 for an annual membership.
The e-commerce juggernaut first offered the subscription program in 2018, soon after Amazon launched in Australia. Prime has expanded over the years and now includes free deliveries, including next-day deliveries in Sydney and Melbourne, access to the group’s video and music offers and deals during the retailer’s annual Prime Day event.
“Prime members love the combination of shopping, savings and entertainment in one membership that Prime provides them, and we are committed to continue investing in and growing the value of Prime,” Regalo said.Amazon had a quiet start to its life in Australia but has steadily grown throughout the pandemic. The company’s revenue hit more than $2.6 billion in 2022, according to documents filed by the corporate regulator.
Wesfarmers’ OnePass program gives users free delivery from the retail conglomerate’s brands, including Bunnings, Kmart, Catch and Target, as well as access to streaming service Disney+ for $14.99 a month.
