BEREA, Ohio — While Browns receiver Amari Cooper reported to his first Browns training camp on Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was 2,400 miles away at Cowboys camp in Oxnard, Ca., ripping Cooper once again for missing two games last season after testing positive for COVID-19 as an unvaccinated player.
Jones made no distinction between how the three players arrived at their unavailability, with Collins and Gregory violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy, compared to Cooper testing positive for COVID-19 amid much stricter rules for unvaccinated players. “I wouldn’t say it was me marching to my own drum,’’ Cooper said. “At the end of the day, I do understand that football is a team sport. But it was such an unprecedented type of moment in the NFL’s history for the decision to be made about putting something that not many people — not anybody knew — the effects of it, into your body.It didn’t stop the backlash, however, from within the organization and by former Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin.
Asked if he was disappointed in his star receiver, Jones said, “If I have a tone, I shouldn’t. the facts are, it’s a ‘we’ thing when you walk into the locker room. And anybody is being counted on to pull his weight. Everybody expects that.’’
