A strong America should not be a solitary America, says the four-decade Marine, Sec. Jim Mattis, in a book to be published early next month.
‘Nations with allies thrive, and those without them wither. Alone, America cannot protect our people and our economy. At this time, we can see storm clouds gathering. A polemicist’s role is not sufficient for a leader.’ That’s a selection from an excerpt, published in the Wall Street Journal, from the soon-to-be-released autobiography of Gen. Jim Mattis, reflecting on a four-decade career in the Marines Corps and his most recent call to duty, as President Trump’s first secretary of defense.
Mattis, in the book, says the nomination for defense secretary surprised him because his initial interview exposed his “strong support of NATO and my dismissal of the use of torture on prisoners,” landing him out of the gate in two disagreements with then-President-elect Trump. But the nomination came, and Mattis, feeling compelled, he says, to continue a career of service, accepted.
When Mattis left the administration in early 2018, he told Trump in a letter that he was leaving because “you have a right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours.” Gen. Mattis’s forthcoming book “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead,” co-authored with Bing West, is slated to be published Sept. 3.We Want to Hear from You Join the conversation
