Significant freezing rain could impact parts of Atlantic Canada this weekend, threatening dangerous driving conditions and power disruptions.

The greatest risk for a heavy freezing rain event will be in Newfoundland, which is forecast to begin between the Bay of Exploits and Bay Verte Peninsula Saturday morning and will extend southwest to Corner Brook.

Where the line sets up is still uncertain, but at least 10 to 30 mm of freezing rain is forecast. Swaths of 30 to 50-plus mm are expected, which will create treacherous travel conditions and lead to utility outages and tree damage. I expect the risk to be lower directly on coastlines and eastern Cape Breton, where it’s forecast to be a bit warmer.

At this point, about two to 10 mm of freezing rain is likely, but swaths of 10 to 30 mm could happen over interior sections of Nova Scotia, southern New Brunswick and western Prince Edward Island. This could create poor travel with the risk of power outages and tree damage.
