ICYMI: A white Christmas in Canada is defined as having at least two centimetres of snow on the ground at 7 a.m. Christmas morning. This year it's shaping up to be a green Christmas for much of Atlantic Canada.
Dreaming of a white Christmas? Much of Atlantic Canada will have to keep dreaming as wind and rain will make it a green Christmas for most major Atlantic Canadian cities. -123RFOne of the questions I’m often asked this time of year is whether it will be a white Christmas.
The odds of having a white Christmas was 56 per cent to 92 per cent between 1960 and 1984. That’s now between 36 per cent and 68 per cent during the period from 1997 to 2021.Will it be a white Chirstmas this year?Much of New Brunswick, higher and mountainous terrain of the Annapolis Valley, North Shore, and Cape Breton Highlands in Nova Scotia, and parts of central/western Newfoundland, and Labrador have snow on the ground. The remainder of the region is green.
The storm’s track puts us on the warmer side of the system, which means precipitation will fall mainly as rain with temperatures in the high single digits and low teens.Considering the current snowpack and the forecast over the coming days, a white Christmas is most likely over the northern half of New Brunswick, with higher elevations in the Cape Breton Highlands, along with western Newfoundland, and Labrador.
If flurries behind it are intense enough, some parts of western P.E.I. and Nova Scotia could see a dusting in time.
