Aurora’s Phillips Park Zoo said see you later to two alligators who have lived at the facility for years, with the pair now settling at a sanctuary in Michigan.
Recently, the alligators - Irwin and Alice - were taken from Aurora to Athens, Michigan, where they are now hanging out with other alligators at the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary, an educational outdoor reptile facility that is open to the public.According to Aurora officials, both alligators, which they said were “a crowd favorite for thousands of children for decades” - were initially confiscated as illegally kept pets.
The two alligators at Phillips Park Zoo in Aurora were shipped to an alligator sanctuary in Michigan on Wednesday in specially-designed crates built by the zoo. “Irwin and Alice are pretty big and have been here 20-plus years and we want them to live their best lives,” he said. “We didn’t want to keep them as just an attraction and a draw. It was the voice of the zookeepers.”
