Some people around the CFL say Drew Desjarlais is already the best guard in the league so when he decided to return to Canada, he had plenty of options.
When the big offensive lineman, after a year in the NFL with the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints, decided he was returning to the CFL it’s believed six teams got into a bidding war. On Monday, it was announced the Ottawa Redblacks had signed Desjarlais to a two-year deal, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the CFL. He will make $250,500 in guaranteed money this season and will make $260,000 in 2024.
The Redblacks took big steps ahead with their offensive line a year ago. Adding Desjarlais is significant. “I’m obviously super grateful for the opportunity ; it was a no-brainer,” said Desjarlais. “I learned a lot about the game and about the business. You get a different feeling every week. One week, you’re thinking, ‘Maybe I’m close.’ The next week, you’re thinking you’re not close at all. It’s definitely a rollercoaster through the season.”
