I'm READY!
for about eight months now, and this September was my first time attending London Fashion Week. It’s been a place I’ve dreamed of coming for fashion week since I discovered Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, John Rocha, and later Simone Rocha, Wales Bonner, and Molly Goddard. To me, it was the place where designers who were, in a sense, “anti-fashion,” at least in the traditional sense, were born and often educated at Central Saint Martins.
London’s fashion scene definitely lives up to the hype in some ways. Young designers are thinking about sustainability and reacting to the political world while at the same time putting forth impeccable craftsmanship. In other ways, London, like Milan and Paris, is behind, especially when it comes to body diversity. While there were a range of skin tones and ages on the runway, during my five days there, I didn’t see much beyond sample size.
