Amid the 88th Texas legislature's special session on school choice, Speaker Dade Phelan faces GOP disputes and calls for resignation after AG Paxton's acquittal
"I'm here to win this race," House Speaker Dade Phelan said this week. "I'm here to Speaker again, next session, and I will put my record up against anybody. And my record is reflective of the priorities of Southeast Texas and the state as a whole." by the 88th Texas legislature, much of the focus over the next thirty days will be on the House of Representatives, and its leader Speaker Dade Phelan, particularly as it comes to passing school choice legislation.
One thing that has changed is Republican infighting, particularly over Phelan's role as Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. After the Senate's, Phelan has been made to be a face of the divide in the Republican Party. "I firmly believe that the state of Texas will be better served if the Speaker Phelan would do the right thing and step aside," Rep. Harrison said previously. Asked by a CBS Austin reporter if he was prepared to make the motion to vacate, himself, Harrison said, "Let's see when the Governor calls us back... I'm still considering all of my options right now."
