It’s not just Madilyn Harks; in Canada it’s a regular occurrence that jails free sex offenders even if they are likely to strike again
Brampton, Ont. is currently in an uproar after learning that recently transitioned serial child sex offender Madilyn Harks is being released into their community. “The fact that Ms. Harks is in a halfway house instead of jail is a clear example of our justice system is broken,” wrote mayor Patrick Brown in a letter to the federal government.
Adding to the outrage is that Harks is believed to be headed for a women’s halfway house across the street from a school that regularly hosts children’s programs and outdoor summer camps. “I cannot think of a worse location and set of circumstances,” a nearby neighbour told the National Post by email. Harks may also be looking for dates.
Having a serial pedophile dumped into their midst may be new to Brampton, but it’s certainly not unusual in Canada. Below, a not-at-all-comprehensive summary of serial sex offenders who have been freed from Canadian jails in just the past 12 months. Each of the men on this list were considered dangerous enough to prompt police warnings that they were likely to strike again.
