Alien: Covenant ends on the darkest note of the franchise, and in doing so, allowed director Ridley Scott to fulfill his plan for the original.

Alien: Covenant's jet-black ending finally allowed Ridley Scott to pay off one of his wishes for the original movie. There was much excitement following the announcement of Scott's return to the Alien franchise after 30 years. However, his planned prequel soon morphed into Prometheus, which was more of a spinoff than a direct follow-up.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Scott's Alien prequel duology featured no end of gorgeous visuals, fascinating sci-fi ideas and a terrific performance from Michael Fassbender. However, the films also suffered from unlikeable characters, stilted dialogue and a weird sidelining of the famous Xenomorph itself. Both movies also lacked the horror edge Scott brought to the classic original, which kicked off the entire Alien movie franchise.

Ridley Scott Wanted To End Alien On A Dark Note In this alternate ending, the Xenomorph killied Ripley by biting off her head - before sending a distress message to Earth using her voice. Scott also considered an Alien ending where Ripley killed the monster, but it's revealed in the final shot that the escape shuttle has a hidden Xenomorph egg inside.

Covenant Has Alien's Bleakest Ending To Date Alien: Covenant was conceived as the next chapter in an ongoing series revolving around Fassbender's android David. During the final act, David is masquerading as a doppelganger android named Walter. In Alien: Covenant's ending, heroine Daniels realizes - far too late - his true identity and is put to sleep in a status pod knowing that David can do what he likes with the ship's sleeping colonists.

In a prequel with many flaws, Covenant's unapologetically dark ending is a highlight and one of the elements that has stayed with those who enjoyed it. Alien closed with Ripley slaying the creature while Prometheus wrapped up with a more hopeful note. Covenant, on the other hand, saw Scott fulfill his desire to commit to the horror of the concept, and send audiences out with a chill.
