Prominent South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh was charged Thursday with insurance fraud and filing a false report in connection with what investigators say was a botched effort to stage his own death on Sept. 4.
The 53-year-old scion of a South Carolina legal dynasty turned himself in just before noon Thursday at the Hampton County Detention Center in the southeastern part of the state. He is expected to make an initial appearance before a magistrate judge late Thursday afternoon.
