The Red Sox outfielder criticized Manoah’s emotions on the mound on a podcast and the Jays pitcher was unfazed by the remarks.
Verdugo insisted there are videos of Manoah, dating back to Triple-A, looking straight at opposing hitters and hurling choice words at them. During a high-intensity Red Sox—Blue Jays game last July,“That just pisses me off,” added Verdugo, who prefaced his remarks by saying he’s actually a fan of players showing emotions as long as it’s a genuine reaction and not directly addressed towards somebody.
“It’s not the way it should be played. It should be played like you’re celebrating it with your team, you’re not disrespecting another player,” he said. Asked for his reaction about the criticism from Verdugo on Tuesday ahead of the Jays’ second game against the Kansas City Royals, Manoah was unfazed.
“Coming from him? I don’t give a s—,” he said, according to Rob Longley of Postmedia. “My job is to pitch and get guys out.” The Jays will travel to Boston for a four-game series against the Red Sox starting May 1. The Red Sox won’t visit Toronto until late June — early July.
