A Canadian woman from Alberta has been released on bail after being arrested on a terrorism peace bond following her return from Syria.
“My view of it is that the Canadian government has a responsibility, where the rights of Canadians are being violated, to take steps to protect the rights of Canadian citizens.”
Syria has been devastated by civil war since its government brutally suppressed the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011. The so-called Islamic State, widely known as ISIS, grew to prominence in next-door Iraq following the U.S. invasion. ISIS eventually invaded eastern Syria, establishing a “caliphate” which at its 2015 peak ruled over eight to 12 million people.
