Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Rajan Sawhney said the move is a bid to address an ongoing labour shortage while helping immigrants make a smooth transition into living in Canada. “Alberta is a magnet for immigration . . . This includes those who already have family here as well as talented newcomers seeking new opportunities on their own.”A recent Calgary Chamber of Commerce report found nearly a third of local businesses are, as the provincial government forecasts a cumulative job shortage of 33,100 workers by 2025 due to a combination of economic growth and a wave of retirements.

Business Council of Alberta vice-president Scott Crockatt praised the move, saying skilled immigration is Alberta’s best shot at filling holes in its labour force.
