Alberta to launch review into COVID-19 handling, but public inquiry off the table ableg abpoli COVID19AB
Health Minister Jason Copping is set to announce the review “pretty shortly,” Premier Jason Kenney said on his regular Corus radio show this weekend.
“Often these judicial inquiries turn into multi-year projects where lawyers make a fortune, tens of millions of dollars are spent and the focus is on process and people often forget what they were supposed to do when it’s all over,” Kenney said. The United Conservative government has only launched one public inquiry since its election in 2019: the Public Inquiry into Anti-Alberta Energy Campaign. The $3.5-million inquiry led by Steve Allan was marred by delays, andBut University of Calgary health law expert Lorian Hardcastle said a public inquiry presents some benefits over one commissioned to an independent third-party firm.
“When you hire someone and pay them to do something for you, they may not be as critical as a judge advised by other experts might be, given that the person you hired probably wants to be hired again in the future.”Article content
