When the cast and crew began filming CTV’s Alberta\u002Dshot family rodeo drama Ride last August, they missed the Calgary Stampede by a month.

It was the first time Skovbye had been to a rodeo. Initially, she also had limited experience on horses, so she had a bit of a learning curve since she was playing a rodeo queen/trick rider.

While rodeo is the backdrop of Ride, at its heart is the McMurray clan. While they are a close-knit bunch, things are not all rosy. The family is led by Isabel, Missy’s kind but tough-as-nails mother-in-law played by TV veteran Nancy Travis. The season opener, which aired last Sunday, also introduced viewers to Cash McMurray, the conflicted middle son and war veteran played by Beau Mirchoff.

“They really let us do what we wanted,” says executive producer Sherri Cooper-Landsman, who is co-showrunner for Ride alongside Rebecca Boss. “It felt like a huge opportunity. They had these other shows and were starting to make really quality, elevated television. They gave us the tools to do that and the executives were great. It didn’t feel any different than working with other broadcasters in the heyday of television. It really felt like a new kind of Hallmark.

Filming wrapped in November, which means the cast and crew got to sample the good, the bad and the ugly when it came to Alberta’s unpredictable climes.
