Despite an election call expected within days, Premier Rachel Notley declines to say when she might make the call: ‘Not yet, soon, but not yet’
Alberta’s governing New Democrats are planning to table new measures to strengthen health care and the province’s democratic institutions in a spring session of the legislature, however Premier Rachel Notley has declined to say when she will call an election.
The Premier would not confirm on Monday whether promises, which include increased access to affordable childcare and women’s reproductive services, would be passed by the legislature before an election that must be held before the end of May.“Not yet, soon, but not yet,” Ms. Notley told reporters in Edmonton about her planned election call.
One of the biggest promises in the speech is a major expansion of a pilot program brought in by Ms. Notley that created 7,300 childcare spaces that cost $25 per day. The Premier promised a “very detailed proposal” for an expanded program that would be open to all families across the province, but would not confirm whether any legislation would be passed.
One of the leaked emails contains an exchange between Mr. Kenney’s current deputy chief of staff and Mr. Callaway’s campaign where a plan was discussed that included a proposed timeline for Mr. Callaway to drop out of the race and endorse Mr. Kenney. The UCP leader has so far dismissed the allegations and said that his campaign’s contact with his opponent was regular politics.
