Alberta will receive $54 million in federal funding to create and implement a 10-year strategy to end gender-based violence, members of the federal and provincial governments announced Thursday.The funding, which will be allocated to the province over four years, is part of a national plan to tackle gender-based violence.
According to figures presented at Thursday’s news conference, approximately 43 per cent of Albertans had experienced at least one incident of sexual violence in their lifetime, as of 2019.Thanks for signing up!The next issue of Calgary Sun Headline News will soon be in your inbox.On a national level, Hepfner cited a statistic that 11 million Canadians have experienced intimate partner violence at least once since the age of 15.
Following the public engagement period, Fir said government representatives will consult with survivors of gender-based violence, specialists in the victims’ services sector, representatives from front-line community organizations, Indigenous communities and other partners to gauge their perspectives on what a provincially focused plan should look like.
The money will support women’s shelters and other organizations that help women and girls escape violence, address gaps in services and target the root causes of gender-based violence.
