Alberta Premier Smith anticipates signing health care deal worth $518 million with Ottawa soon ableg abpoli abhealth cdnpoli
Premiers had been pushing for the federal government to boost its share of the cost of health care to 35 per cent from 22 per cent, an increase that would have amounted to an extra $28 billion from the federal treasury this year. Instead, the latest offer amounts to about $4.6 billion in new money per year.
While Smith said health care is the UCP government’s No. 1 priority, her comments come after NDP Opposition Leader Rachel Notley accused the UCP of “starving the system” on Wednesday. Smith called for the one-on-one meeting to air her doubts about the looming federal just transition legislation expected to help workers adapt to a global shift to a low-carbon economy.
