Alberta Premier Danielle Smith defended a highly criticized report on the province's COVID-19 response, emphasizing the need to consider diverse medical opinions, including those that challenge mainstream scientific consensus. The report, commissioned by the government and released last Friday, has drawn significant criticism for its suggestions that go against established scientific understanding regarding public health measures, masking, and vaccine efficacy. Ms. Smith stated that the report is still under review and no decisions have been made regarding its recommendations.

Premier Danielle Smith defended a highly criticized report on Alberta ’s COVID-19 response by saying it is important to listen to a broad cross-section of doctors, including those with contrarian views, to prepare for any future pandemics.

The Premier’s office was provided the government-commissioned report roughly eight months ago but it was not publicly released until last Friday. Final recommendations from the task force included that Alberta halt the use of COVID-19 vaccines without full disclosure of their potential risks and end their use in healthy children, in addition to protecting health care workers from disciplinary action for promoting or using alternative medical treatments and refraining from any future mask mandates.

“That’s not what we’re going to do,” she said. “We’re going to make our best assessment based on what we’re seeing with the evidence. And the evidence has changed. The information that we’ve had over time, and what we were told at the beginning, is a little bit different than what we’re hearing today, so we’ve got to adjust to that.”
