Despite early buzz, Mr. Nenshi has yet to put a dent in the electorate’s support for the UCP and Ms. Smith

The former federal cabinet minister scorched them into the province’s political consciousness, and they remain synonymous with Mr. Kenney and the UCP’s debut. They were his priorities, slogan and brand, all wrapped into one.
Janet Brown, a respected pollster and commentator in Alberta, said Mr. Nenshi’s name recognition as Calgary’s former mayor is not enough to carry him in provincial politics. And Mr. Nenshi, who does not have a seat in the legislature, has yet to roll out a “big vision” for how he will lead the party.
The NDP on Wednesday defended its turf in a by-election in Lethbridge-West, a riding in a mid-sized city in southern Alberta. A loss would have been a major knock against Mr. Nenshi’s leadership chops, but the victory is far from a significant boost. Shannon Phillips, who served in cabinet under former premier Rachel Notley, first won the seat for the NDP in 2015 and staved off the UCP in 2019 and 2023 general elections.
And then he pointed to a sixth: “Helping Albertans really see that this is a government that is reckless, that is incompetent, and is dangerous.”Most Albertans, Mr. Nenshi said, believe the NDP manages areas such as health care and education better than conservatives. Albertans, he said, also tend to believe conservatives are superior when it comes to economic files, such as fostering jobs and balancing budgets. Mr.
