Smith has spent the last few weeks trying to convince Trump that tariffs, especially on energy exports from Canada, would harm Americans

It’s been hard not to keep your eyes trained on the United States this week as newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump unleashed his special brand of chaos, pretty much from the get-go.

“My interpretation of the President is that he likes to win,” she said. “So it is up to us to demonstrate how we can get a double win here.” On the other side of the country, Smith even found an ally in Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston. After Wednesday’s meeting, Houston said he called on the Prime Minister to immediately approve the Energy East pipeline, a defunct project that would transport crude oil across the country from Alberta to Quebec and New Brunswick.

And then on Thursday, in a speech to the World Economic Forum, Trump again reiterated his agitations about turning Canada into the 51st state.
