Alberta Health Services (AHS) is undergoing another leadership change as Athana Mentzelopoulos, the president and CEO, steps down just over a year after being hired. This departure adds to the instability within AHS, which has seen a rapid turnover of top executives in recent years. The province is currently overhauling its health system, dismantling AHS and creating four new health-care delivery organizations. Experts express concern about the impact of this leadership instability on the province's health system.

Alberta Health Services — which the province is dismantling as it forges ahead with its full-scale and controversial overhaul of the health system — is facing even more uncertainty as yet another leader departs.
"It''s not good to have all this instability in the health system," said Dr. Braden Manns, a professor of health economics at the University of Calgary and former interim vice-president at AHS. The Alberta government is in the process of completely restructuring health care in the province and creating four new health-care delivery organizations.
The province said Tremblay will oversee AHS while a permanent leader is recruited. The spokesperson said the provincial government expects that candidate will have "experience in large-scale, hospital-based health care service delivery."AHS compensation disclosures reveal Yiu's termination resulted in $660,000 in severance pay and Chies was entitled to nearly $1.4 million., published online, reveals her base salary was $583,443 per year.
"It is a significant amount of money. If you think about what you might have gotten for that money in terms of family doctor visits or blood tests run at labs, it's very significant.
