ICYMI: Education budget increases by 5.2 per cent to address growth, classroom complexities ableg abpoli
Over three years, the province vows targeted funding of $126 million to continued supports for increased staffing and training opportunities, as well as more specialists such as counsellors, psychologists and interpreters to support mental health.
“Over the last four years, Alberta students have shouldered massive cuts to the system because of underfunding. And now, before an election, with a surplus, we are still not seeing nearly enough to make an impact on classrooms. “We’ve seen an increase in funding for complexities, for more teachers, assistants, therapists. And that’s good to see. But we need to have a conversation about how that funding will be used in schools.”
And as school boards face millions of dollars in deferred maintenance costs for aging facilities, $18 million is being provided for infrastructure maintenance work.
